About TypeDude
What is TypeDude?
TypeDude is a lightweight, browser-based typing practice tool that helps you measure and improve your typing speed and accuracy. Start a timed test, type the presented words, and review your results.
How does it work?
When you start a test, a sequence of words is presented. Type them in the input box. The app measures characters typed, compares them to the reference text, and computes performance metrics in real time.
What is WPM, CPM, CPS, and Accuracy?
WPM (Words Per Minute): Average number of words correctly typed per minute. A word is standardized as five characters.
CPM (Characters Per Minute): Number of correctly typed characters per minute.
CPS (Characters Per Second): Average correctly typed characters per second.
Accuracy: Percentage of typed characters that match the reference text.
Is my data saved?
TypeDude processes typing metrics in your browser. We only collect data you explicitly submit (for example, when creating or sharing a challenge). See our Privacy Policy for details.
How does TypeDude calculate your WPM?
TypeDude counts correctly typed characters, converts them into words using the standard 5-characters-per-word convention, and divides by elapsed minutes. Only correct characters are considered for WPM to reflect effective typing speed. See more
What is a good typing speed?
Benchmarks vary by context, but typical ranges are:
Beginner: 20โ40 WPM
Average: 40โ60 WPM
Advanced: 60โ80 WPM
Expert: 80+ WPM
Focus on gradual, consistent improvement rather than an immediate target. See more
Why is typing accuracy important?
Accuracy reduces time spent correcting mistakes and makes your output usable. Higher accuracy typically leads to higher sustained WPM because fewer corrections are required.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Tips:
Practice consistently with short sessions (10โ20 minutes).
Prioritize accuracy; increase speed only after accuracy is stable.
Use varied content to build familiarity with different words and symbols.
Identify and target commonly mistyped keys or combos.
Start with correct finger placement (home row), practice drills focused on one finger at a time, and use progressive lessons that add keys gradually. Avoid looking at the keyboard and be patient โ muscle memory builds with regular practice.
